Fantastic movie. I saw the very first Alien on the big screen. That's right.. back in 1979. I followed all the Alien sequels after. Then I saw Prometheus and that really opened up the lore of this franchise. Now we have Alien Covenant... and I loved it! I am going to make this review plain and simple. I am not going to break it all down to what is believable science and not believable science in this movie. Anybody who questions the science behind Alien Covenant yet doesn't question the science behind Star Trek is a loon. There's a reason why movies like Alien Covenant is called Science FICTION. Note the caps...FICTION. Did you ever question how Chewbacca made the same sounding growl over and over, and good ole' Han Solo was able to understand the meaning of one growl over the other same sounding growl? Anyway, I am going off tangent but you get my point.
When you watch Alien Covenant, you really need to open your mind to the story. This is before Ellen Ripley's time. To be honest, I am quite happy not seeing Ellen Ripley in an Alien movie though I will definitely be VERY excited if she does come back to the franchise. Alien Covenant goes deep into the origin of the species. I like David's character. Evil...probably worse than the xeno. At least xenos kill to survive, David, on the other hand, kills to prove a point. The best way to watch this is to think about the connection of this movie to the first Alien. Forget about Aliens 2, but just think about the first Alien and how everything is connected. Think about the first Alien and how the Engineer spacecraft in LV-426 got there.
If the entire Engineer population got wiped out, then how did that spacecraft in LV-426 found it's way there? Note that in Prometheus, it's LV-223. Maybe I am reading into it too much. All I am saying is that when you watch Alien Covenant, you need to think ten steps ahead of the story and how it will lead to the first Alien. Forget about the hazmat suits, the spores, the crew...and just look at the story as a whole.
End of the day, it's a science fiction movie. We go to movies to enjoy and have fun, and not break it down into little pieces and trying to make sense out of it.
