Something for Everyone

By The Peripatetic Reader on December 12, 2016 Format: Blu-ray I confess. The only reason I saw this movie in the theater was my prurient interest in seeing the movie that broke up Brad Pitt’s marriage with Angelina Jolie. I ended up really liking the movie, and despite what Rotten Tomatoes believes (what do they know, anyway?), I think it is a really good — not great, but good — movie.

Some people may dismiss the movie simply as a romance movie. Yes, there is romance, and some of the scenes are very intimate, tastefully and expertly done, and surely added fuel to the fire to rumors of an off-screen romance between Pitt and Cotillard. I will let the viewer judge whether anything really happened, but the on-screen chemistry between the principals is very convincingly done.

Aside from that, the movie has plenty more. It is a war movie, for beginners, and the action sequences are thrilling. It shows the slimy Nazis, the equally slimy French collaborators, it shows the brave French Resistence. It is a political thriller, it has suspense, it has drama, it has humor. There is a little bit for any taste or interest. It is immensely entertaining.

Director Zemeckas’ attention for detail in war-time Casablanca and England was impeccable. The acting by Pitt, Cottillard and the supporting cast was consistently strong and expert.

I questioned whether the movie deserved four or five stars. I gave it five if not for the entertainment and production values.
