4.0 out of 5 starsGreat purple asteroids!

Format: HD Digital Code

Admittedly the Ice Age formula is stretching thin but I found this a pleasant diversion (though I did go in with low expectations). "Ice Age: Collision Course", the fifth entry in this series, doesn't inject any fresh formula into its prehistoric storyline but it makes up for this with its heart being worn warmly on its sleeve and the seemingly never-ending and wildly outrageous (in a safe for kids way) string of Scrat misadventures that always cause the terrible terrestrial upheavals. In his latest nutty adventure the acorn obsessed rataccoon finds his way into a spaceship buried in the ice and accidentally sends it into outer space, pinning around the planets like a cue call on a pool table, and thus setting up our galaxy accidentally. Meanwhile, he bumps into a beautifully rendered purple haze of an asteroid that is headed to earth and magnetically attracted to previous magnetic asteroid impacts.

Manny the mammoth and company see the skyward harbinger lights and try to figure out how to stave off extinction again while Manny and mate Ellie try to figure out how to stave off daughter Peaches' marriage to mini-Manny mammoth Julian. Of course they see how wrong they are to try to keep their old-enough-to-be-on-her-own daughter to themselves (you can't keep a child a child forever) and moms and pops everywhere are likely to connect to this storyline, while the tweens will connect to Ellie's story to some degree. But the young 'uns will certainly laugh and doofy Sid who is along for the ride as the pratfall guy. Also along for the ride is his grandma, Granny the sloth (voiced by Wanda Sykes), who just kills all of her lines. She's the best returning character IMO.

I found myself laughing warmly more often than I expected, enjoying the strangely beautiful purply asteroid visuals, and smiling at Scrat's continued heroics in the face of the defiant acorn that will not be had. Quite the imagination. On the whole I'd give the thawing Ice Age entry 3.75 warm stars.
