Embraces Its B-Movie Legacy

“Proud Mary” is a reasonably well-made little action thriller which owes a lot to the R-rated drive-in exploitation classics of the 1970s—movies like “Coffy,” “Foxy Brown,” and “Friday Foster.” And the picture appears to embrace its drive-in heritage, from the 1970s-style graphics of its opening credits all the way through to its closing scene.

In “Proud Mary,” a professional assassin employed by a Boston crime family is ordered by her employer to execute a low-level bookie. In doing so she unknowingly orphans the bookie’s teenaged son. And driven by guilt, the assassin reappears in the boy’s life a year later to act as a guardian angel…and increasingly as a mother.

Directed by Babak Najafi, the Swedish-Iranian filmmaker behind 2016’s “London Has Fallen,” “Proud Mary” is the first motion picture role of actress Taraji P. Henson following her acclaimed appearance in the 2016 critical and commercial smash “Hidden Figures.”

Henson, who’s also familiar to audiences from her leading role as Cookie Lyon on television’s “Empire,” is a genuinely gifted actress who presumably has her choice of a wide variety of film roles…which makes her appearance in a modest exploitation film somewhat puzzling.

But while it’s true that “Proud Mary” is pointedly not a great film, neither were the films from the 1970s which inspired it. In many ways, their very outrageousness was partly what made the exploitation pictures of the time so appealing to audiences, and simultaneously so distasteful to critics.

Despite enormous levels of violence, some issues with continuity, and a badly-dubbed Danny Glover as the patriarch of the Boston crime family which employs Mary, Taraji P. Henson contributes a terrific performance as Mary, sympathetic and likable in a remarkably unlikable role.

“Proud Mary” is earning generally unfavorable reviews from critics, including a score of 25% from Rotten Tomatoes and 35% from Metacritic. Surprisingly, the picture is simultaneously receiving a positive response from audiences polled by CinemaScore, who assign “Proud Mary” an average grade of B+.

Rated R for graphic violence and adult situations, “Proud Mary” is not for the kiddies, but you knew that already. The picture is also not recommended for the sensitive or faint-of-heart, or viewers who might be driven to despair by the sight of a Maserati Gran Turismo Sports Coupe reduced to scrap metal by gunfire.

Accordingly, automobile enthusiasts are encouraged to proceed with caution.
